Developed in Germany at the end of the 19th century, the 7.92x57mm Mauser — commonly called 7.9mm — was a standard military rifle cartridge used throughout both the First and Second World Wars.

Designed for the Gewehr 98 infantry rifle developed by Paul Mauser, the 7.92x57mm cartridge quickly became the standard-issue ammunition of the German army and remained in military service for roughly half a century.

Firearms That Used the Calibre
The calibre was standard ammunition for the Mauser Gewehr 98 and Karabiner 98k infantry rifles, as well as for machine guns including the MG 08, MG 34 and MG 42.
Naming and Related Calibres
In metric notation the cartridge is known as the 7.92x57mm Mauser; English-language literature commonly refers to it as the "8mm Mauser". It is not part of the same cartridge family as 7.62mm NATO, though both rounds marked important milestones in 20th-century infantry rifle design.
Applications and Battlefield Role
High penetrating power and an effective range made the 7.9mm a preferred choice for infantry rifles, light machine guns and sniper rifles, and these characteristics account for its widespread use in both World Wars.
Status Today
Modern armed forces have since moved to NATO-standard calibres — 5.56mm and 7.62mm NATO — so the 7.9mm is no longer in active military service.
