Shotgun Chamber and Cartridge Compatibility

A cartridge must match a shotgun's chamber exactly in calibre, case length and case dimensions. Using a cartridge outside these tolerances risks gas leakage, poor accuracy or a serious safety incident.

Chamber compatibility means a cartridge's calibre, case length and dimensions match the firearm's chamber precisely — a factor that governs firing safety, shot accuracy and barrel life. This page outlines the core compatibility principles and compares case dimensions across Ozkursan's gauge range.

What determines compatibility

Compatibility is set by three measurements: cartridge calibre (for example 12, 16, 20 or 36 CAL.), case length (for example 70 mm or 63 mm) and case diameter. A shotgun's chamber is manufactured to the calibre and case length marked on it, and cartridges outside those dimensions should not be used — for example, a 76 mm (magnum) cartridge should never be forced into a chamber built for 70 mm. Always check the calibre and case-length information printed on the cartridge, which manufacturers specify to SAAMI and CIP international standards.

Manufacturing and certification

Ozkursan has manufactured hunting and shooting ammunition since 1987. Production is covered by ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety) certification, issued by KingCert International Certification Ltd.

Signs of chamber mismatch

Warning signs of a chamber mismatch include a cartridge that is difficult to chamber or extract, delayed ignition, or an abnormal sound from the barrel. If any of these occur, stop using the cartridge and have the firearm inspected by a qualified gunsmith. Chamber tolerances on older or heavily used firearms can shift over time, so always base cartridge selection on the calibre and case length marked on the firearm itself.
