Criteria for Selecting the Right Ammunition

"Best ammunition" isn't a single product — it depends on the intended use. What works for a pistol cartridge may not suit a shotgun cartridge or a blank round; this page sets out the technical criteria to weigh when choosing.

Selecting the right ammunition means matching six technical criteria to the platform and purpose at hand, from intended use through to manufacturer certification.

Intended Use

The first step in selecting ammunition is defining the intended use: sport shooting, hunting, blank/sound-only use, or blank-firing pistols each call for a different product family. For hunting shotguns, see Hunting Shotgun Ammunition; for rifle calibres, see Rifle Ammunition.

Calibre Compatibility

Ammunition must match the calibre of the firearm exactly — a calibre mismatch is a safety risk. For pistol calibres such as 9x19 mm and .45 ACP, see What Is .45 ACP?; for 12, 16, 20 and 36 gauge shotguns, see the Hunting & Shooting Ammunition category.

Case Type and Material

Case material (steel or brass) and the case type code (for example "12 16 70" on shotgun cartridges) determine both firearm compatibility and use conditions. How to read a case type code is explained in Hunting Shotgun Cartridge.

Primer Construction

The Boxer-type primer used across Ozkursan's production is the common ignition component in pistol ammunition, rifle ammunition and shotgun cartridges alike. Primer type is one of the basic factors behind reliable ignition.

Manufacturer Certification and Traceability

Manufacturer quality assurance is also a factor worth weighing. Ozkursan holds ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety) certification issued by KingCert International Certification Ltd, covering the manufacture and sale of rifled pistol and rifle ammunition, blank cartridges, plastic projectiles and shotgun cartridges. Ozkursan's production facility is located in Adapazarı/Sakarya, with corporate headquarters in Istanbul; each product's product code, catalogue code and series name are documented individually in the product database for traceability.

Regulatory Compliance in Türkiye

Purchasing ammunition in Türkiye is subject to applicable firearms regulations.
